I loooooove handknit socks, but I am far from an obsessive sock knitter. Socks are like sleeves (also not a fan), only rather than being the rewarding conclusion to a sweater, they are single projects with narrower sections and more turns and finger work. Perhaps it’s the cumbersome quality of working the magic loop (admittedly, I also knit socks two-at-a-time, rendering them even more unwieldy, but if not TAAT I’m pretty sure I’d never complete a pair), but they generally take me forever to finish.

However, these socks practically knit themselves! OK, not quite. But they did work up much faster, which I owe to the sport weight. Add to that the magic of watching the distinctive multi-colored stripes form, and I do in fact have a new obsession: Must Stash Socks sport weight!

Must Stash Yarn dyes up some of the most creative and unique self-striping sock yarn on the market. Last year I knit a pair of socks for Sophie using their Apple Picking colorway, and these remain my daughter’s favorite socks (see post here). This year, I decided I needed a pair for me and selected their Campfire colorway.

Aren’t these autumn-colored stripes brilliant? There are a couple of different shades of orange in there . . . 😍

For theses socks, I followed my typical Vanilla sock setup:

  1. Work the cast-on and increases of the toe (until desired toe box depth is reached) by following the Sample Sock pattern in the book Toe-Up Two-at-a-Time Socks by Melissa Morgan-Oakes
  2. Knit until the desired foot length is reached and work a Fish Lips Kiss Heel

I will add that my FLK heel turned out a little short (probably because of the sport weight yarn), so I knit a few additional rows of gray on the upper back of the heel, which resulted in a heel that is not quite as neat as I like. However, the fit is great!

I had not heard for the FLK heel! I will need to check it out. So glad to see this colorway in action—just gorgeous!

  2. Shannon says:

I have found that I generally like to start increases for my heels under the arch of my foot. For some reason it seems to hug my foot better. I am also curious what size shoe you wear? I never get socks that tall from one skein. Your socks look fabulous.

    1. I wear a women’s US 9 and didn’t even use up all of the skein! In fact, I had one brown section and one more multicolored section remaining for each foot. (The skein comes divided in half for a perfect match.)

Wonderful socks made from wonderful Must Stash Yarn

  4. Deanna says:

I have knitted socks separately but I love knitting sock 2 at a time, that way both are done at the same time.

  5. Danielle says:

I loooooove the Fall colors! I have knit 6-8 pairs of socks, but I wish I liked knitting them more. I always get a wandering eye for other projects when I knit socks. And I have tried to knit toe-up two or three times. I always end up ripping it out and going cuff down. My next strategy is going to be knitting a sock with a bit more pattern, so I don’t get bored! Yours are soooo lovely!

  6. Julie says:

I have never knit sport weight socks before or two at a time. The latter intimidated me. Lol. These are beautiful socks. Thanks for the vanilla recipe and the giveaway!

Your socks are absolutely beautiful. I love when the yarn is exciting and socks seem to knit themselves up quickly! I also find I want to knit them longer so I don’t have to say goodbye to the project as quickly.

your socks are stunning. somehow, a good self-striping yarn makes knitting socks a painless experience, especially when done TAAT.

  28. Alicia says:

I love these socks in this amazing colorway!! I’ve never made toe up socks and have no idea how to do a fish lips kiss heel but would love to learn. I taught myself to knit in 2009, mostly because I wanted to knit socks. I finally knit my first pair a little over a year ago. Haha. I knit socks top down on dpn’s. I need to learn new techniques!

    1. Congrats, you’re the winner!

  30. LOVE ❤️ Must Stash, have always wanted to knit a pair of socks with their beautiful yarn! And yes, Two At A Time is the only way for me!

  31. Anonymous says:

Your socks are gorgeous! I also use the FLK heel and love it!

  32. We all know I AM an obsessive sock knitter! 😂 I love these so, so much! The colorway is absolutely fabulous. The beautiful thing about self striping yarn is that it makes it easy to get lost in the stripes. They knit so much faster! *one more stripe*

  33. Debbie says:

I have a question rather than a comment. I am just finishing a pair of socks using the Apple Picking yarn from Must Stash. Like you, I used a different yarn for the Fish Lips Kiss Heel. I found that I had to do one row of the heel contrast yarn across the front of the sock (as the final row of the heel) to join the two sections. From your photos, I do not see your blue heel yarn across the front of the sock. How did you avoid this?

    1. I cut the heel yarn, worked across in brown, and rejoined in the heel color. I then worked the top of the heel back and forth until it was the height I liked. Because of the sport weight, the heel was a little short for my liking. Hope that helps!

      1. Debbie says:

Thanks. I appreciate your help. I am new to knitting and thank you for introducing me to the Must Stash yarns. Love your work.

  34. Mélanie Perron says:

Oh I’d like that! I’ve never tried socks 🙂

  35. Gail says:

Love this color way! I’ve always knit socks top down and would like to try toe up with a FLK heel to keep the stripe pattern intact :))
