I loooooove handknit socks, but I am far from an obsessive sock knitter. Socks are like sleeves (also not a fan), only rather than being the rewarding conclusion to a sweater, they are single projects with narrower sections and more turns and finger work. Perhaps it’s the cumbersome quality of working the magic loop (admittedly, I also knit socks two-at-a-time, rendering them even more unwieldy, but if not TAAT I’m pretty sure I’d never complete a pair), but they generally take me forever to finish.

However, these socks practically knit themselves! OK, not quite. But they did work up much faster, which I owe to the sport weight. Add to that the magic of watching the distinctive multi-colored stripes form, and I do in fact have a new obsession: Must Stash Socks sport weight!

Must Stash Yarn dyes up some of the most creative and unique self-striping sock yarn on the market. Last year I knit a pair of socks for Sophie using their Apple Picking colorway, and these remain my daughter’s favorite socks (see post here). This year, I decided I needed a pair for me and selected their Campfire colorway.

Aren’t these autumn-colored stripes brilliant? There are a couple of different shades of orange in there . . . 😍

For theses socks, I followed my typical Vanilla sock setup:

  1. Work the cast-on and increases of the toe (until desired toe box depth is reached) by following the Sample Sock pattern in the book Toe-Up Two-at-a-Time Socks by Melissa Morgan-Oakes
  2. Knit until the desired foot length is reached and work a Fish Lips Kiss Heel

I will add that my FLK heel turned out a little short (probably because of the sport weight yarn), so I knit a few additional rows of gray on the upper back of the heel, which resulted in a heel that is not quite as neat as I like. However, the fit is great!

Love how lively this colorway is! I, too, suck at second sock/sleeve syndrome, but these colorways might just be The. Trick.! 😁😍

    1. Leslie says:

Still haven’t learned to love two at a time socks but second sock syndrome has hit me hard lately and I think it’s time to give it another go!

      1. I think it’s one of those “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” kind of things. 😆

  2. Trini says:

    These really pop!

  3. Niki Ivey says:

I just purchased the FLK instructions this morning…the paragraphs of instruction look daunting, please tell me it’s pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it!

    1. It is a very wordy pattern that goes into a little too much explanation, but I just knit to that bone on my ankle and then follow the instructions starting on Page 9. The tutorials in the back are very clear. It’s a bargain for a $1 pattern!

  4. Leisa says:

I love knitting vanilla socks! These are gorgeous..I was thinking wow, they look like a campfire…then I saw the name of the sock yarn! Ha! I could totally name sock yarns!

  5. Sherry MacCullouch says:

I love the color of your socks! They are so autumn like

  6. Staci says:

I am in love with Must Stach Yarn! I just got my first skein of must match sock this year and have loved the pair. They’re so soft and lovely and I cannot wait to buy more of them.

  7. ikkinlala says:

I’m knitting with the same yarn (in the same colourway) right now, and I love it – it’s the first time I’ve really understood why people like self-striping yarn so much.

  8. Tricia says:

This is exciting – I’m still very new but decided socks should be my next “first” attempt so perfect timing!

  9. Lindsay Leider says:

Gorgeous socks! The contrasting blue of the heels, toes and rubbing is perfect against the Must Stash Campfire. I haven’t tried their yarn before, but now you have me itching!

  10. Shawna Sannier says:

I just love that color way – wow! I’ll have to try this yarn.

  11. Anja Stadler says:

I’m not a sock knitter either, but really want to be. I ordered some self striping yarn and hope that the curiosity of finding out the next color stripe will do the trick. I’m also planning on learning some new ways to knit socks, to find our which pattern will make me knit more socks. I just recently discovered you as a designer but love your website and your patterns. Looking forward to following along. Happy Fall, happy knitting!

  12. Cherish says:

Love these! I just finished a pair of vanilla socks with a FLK heel. Must say, that method may make me a toe-up sock knitter yet!

  13. Kathy Harry says:

I’ve tried TAAT and just get confused. I like to do mine concurrently on 2 sets of needles. But I haven’t tried sport weight socks yet. Maybe this year…

  14. I am so excited to learn about a DK sock yarn! My dad is a roofer so the warmer the sock, the better. I cannot wait to get my hands on some, especially since I love a good stripe!

  15. Stacy says:

I love knitting socks and I love those colors!

  16. Jennifer Tripp Mead says:

Love the colors in Campfire! They really are evocative of fall and bonfires. I go back and forth between magic loop and DPNs trying to find a good sock knitting groove. I wish I could work on them in meetings or watching T.V., but have never quite got the hang of knitting them by touch. Maybe sport weight would make a difference. Thanks for the opportunity to win a gift certificate to Must Stash Yarn

  17. Linda says:

Love the Campfire color paired with the sky blue gray toes, heel and cuff.

  18. Stephanie says:

I love how vanilla socks give yarns a canvas upon which to shine!! Your stripey socks are so lovely!

  19. Drew says:

So generous! I only have a few skeins of sport weight sock yarn in my stash but can’t wait to give them a try!!

  20. carolssmith67 says:

I haven’t tried socks yet, but like you, I’ll use the magic loop method and TAAT. There is no other way!

  21. Amber says:

I love the colorways from Must Stash Yarn! I learned to knit socks TAAT but now I just do them one a time using magic loop and it’s so much faster and much more portable. I always carry a sock to knit in my purse so I can get a few rounds in here and there and then they’re done before I know it!

  22. Anonymous says:

Love these!! I am an obsessive sock knitter and like to knit mine one at a time. You should try that! And then make sure to cast on the 2nd sock right after binding off the 1st. For my husbands socks, which are much bigger, I have found that knitting them concurrently helps with finishing faster & second sock syndrome. You need to knit more socks so you can wear them with your new boots! 😉

  23. Allison says:

FLK heel is my favorite! Beautiful socks! And Muststash has the best stripes. I’ve got my eye on Vespa!

  24. Lena Yafuso says:

I’ve admired that colorway for a long time. Your socks are beautiful! Must Stash dyes some great yarn, I wish I could get every single one in their catalog.

  25. Lisa Mazzitelli says:

You are brave! I love knitting and wearing handknit socks, but I just get the yarn and needles tangled when I try to do two-at-a-time. Sometimes I get second sock syndrome ….. I wish I could knit socks TAAT.

    Have a good day!

  26. Jamie says:

Love how these turned out! The colorway is gorgeous!!

  27. Anonymous says:

I have coveted Must Stash Yarn for quite a long time. So beautiful and fun to knit!

    1. That’s where I always get held up! 😆

  39. Angela says:

I love knitting socks!!!!! Partly because there’s a lot going on that anything even remotely more complicated than vanilla knitting just kills me 😂😂 I also just purchased my first ever skein of must stash yarn this past weekend at Rhinebeck! Loving everything about these socks and thank you for the generous giveaway ❤️❤️

  40. Dawn says:

  44. Christine C. says:

Your campfire socks are gorgeous and fit SO well, bravo!

  45. Jessica M. says:

I’m almost finished with a pair of socks myself! I’ve been changing toes and heels out trying to figure out what works best for my daughter’s feet. I want to make my next pair out of self striping yarn, so this giveaway is amazing!!
