Mom’s Filigree Shawl

Every now and then I come across an amazing shawl that I simply have to knit, but this one may triumph them all.

Filigree by Julie Knits in Paris

Yarn: Knit Cosmic Strings Yak (65% merino, 20% silk and 15% yak) in colorways Tobacco, Temple, Dark Woods and Shadows

Filigree is a gorgeous four-color fading lace shawl pattern by Julie Debreux (Julie Knits in Paris). It features multiple lace sections encased in two cables, a beautiful brioche border along one of the long ends and two corrugated ribbing borders along each of the short ends. Above is a closeup of the first color (Tobacco, which is reddish brown with specks of gold) fading into the second color (Temple, a purple gray).

The Filigree pattern calls for a merino/silk/yak fingering weight blend, so I went with Knit Cosmic Strings Yak. They dye some of the prettiest fades that I have seen. In fact, I used their yarn for a similar fade for my Forest Grove Shawl last year.

I love the metallic colors of this fade on this yarn base! It is striking to compare the colors in cool light (above) and warm light (below).

When I saw this shawl in my feed back in the summer, I knew I had to knit it for my mom for Christmas. I finished and blocked it in time, all while keeping it a total surprise from Mom. (She thought I was knitting her a hat. Ha!)

I even sneaked onto my parents’ property before Christmas to model the shawl while Andy took pictures for me.

It’s so nice to have the option of wearing it with different colors facing!

Happy New Year to you and yours! Now, what to knit for Mom next year? 🤔
