If it’s blue and I’m knitting it, then there’s a good chance it’s for my mom. She absolutely loves blue, and can you blame her? She looks amazing in it!
There are few things I like less than knitting the same large garment TWICE. However, Portage is one of those special pieces that I feel everyone should knit, and having knit my own (which I wear religiously), I knew my mom deserved to have one for her knit wardrobe. Moreover, she was quite enamored with my Portage, so that sealed the deal on her knit Christmas gift.
Portage is a design by Melissa Schaschwary of Dandiliongirl Designs. Click here to view and/or purchase the pattern from her Ravelry store.
My mom hand-picked her yarn online from Primrose Yarn Co, a brand whose yarn I use routinely. She chose the colorway “The Terror,” which I insisted had to be on the Marquess MCN base.
The shot below was taken with indoor lighting and prior to blocking. Since my mom is teensy I knit the XS size. However, because my Portage grew quite a bit in length upon blocking, I shortened the back by one inch on my mom’s version. I also raised the pockets by about an inch by starting higher on the collar. Bowie approves!
